Grassroots Movement: Why Bamboo is Our Sustainability Superhero

Untitled (666 x 443 px) (1).png

People are often surprised to learn that our ducks are handmade by skilled artisans in Indonesia, and even more astounded to discover that every character is carved from the root of the world’s tallest grass: bamboo!

In this series, we dive into some incredible bamboo stories to discover what our ducks are really made of. From bamboo’s Indonesian heritage as a versatile and symbolic material and its leading role in Wayang Golek puppetry to the sustainability superpowers that make bamboo such an important plant today, join us as we get back to our ducks’ roots.

From gnarly roots to garden roosts, our ducks take a very natural journey that starts with the soil and (in theory!) could end there too. In this post, we dig into the greener side of DCUK: how bamboo became our material of choice, why it’s such a sustainability superhero, and how every choice, from our packaging to your reviews play their part. It’s all about making joyful things, thoughtfully. Because when it comes to protecting the planet, we believe in waddling lightly.

Section One Bamboo Roots: From ugly duckling to… adorable duckling!

Every character we create is hand-carved from bamboo root - the first material we ever used and still our favourite. Overlooked and undervalued, the gnarly root of the world's fastest-growing plant is often discarded and left to rot.

Yet, in skilful hands, this ugly duckling can be transformed, quite literally, into an elegant swan. In Indonesia, bamboo shoots are a popular food and bamboo canes are used for building and decoration. By giving the plants’ roots a new life and providing regular employment to craftspeople in West Java, we hope to create something beautiful together.

Brilliant bamboo: Our sustainability superhero

Bamboo evolved from prehistoric grasses around 40 million years ago and has been growing strong ever since. Famous for its speedy growth (up to 3.7 cm an hour or nearly a metre a day!!), soil-stabilising, carbon-sequestrating, pollution-absorbing, oxygen-producing powerhouse contributes so much to the wellbeing of our planet that it’s hard to know where to begin. Bamboo’s fibres absorb pollutants like a sponge, its roots prevent soil erosion, and its clumping nature provides shade, urban cooling and protection from storms for villages. Really, you could say, bamboo is the real hero in every DCUK story.

Compostable (sob) companions

DCUK ducks and feathered friends are an example of cradle-to-cradle design (or should that be ‘nest-to-nest’?). In C2C design, materials are seen as nutrients that circulate in healthy systems without waste. When a duck is carved from bamboo root, the only leftovers are wood shavings and sawdust, which can be swept up, added to compost, and returned to the soil to grow more bamboo. The same goes for the characters themselves. In theory (and please whisper this if your feathered friends are around), you could put them in your compost heap. After a couple of years, all that would be left would be three recyclable metal pins and some very contented worms.

Planting trees, potato packaging, and other earth kind capers

Choosing bamboo is one of many things DCUK does to celebrate and protect the natural world. Perhaps most importantly, DCUK is almost entirely plastic-free. Ducks don’t like plastic. It clogs ponds, pollutes puddles, and even finds its way into our ducklings’ nests and food, whereas cardboard and potato-starch-based Bio-Fil make lovely compost-friendly nests for our ducks en route to you. And, just like magic, when your new friend arrives, we’ll transform your review into new plants with Treefo, Feefo’s reforestation initiative. This small act can have a big impact as your kind words help forests grow, support wildlife, and fight climate change.
