A celebration of DCUK’s longstanding partnership with our Indonesian craftspeople.
Taking the distinctive DCUK duckling shape as a starting point, we combined the heritage craft techniques used to create all our characters with indigenous soft and hardwoods to explore the effects of combinations of material, colour and texture.
Inspired by Nature
Inspired by the fluid form of the Indian Runner duck and its echo in the rippling grain of Indonesian pine, mahogany and rosewood, DCUK collaborated with Javanese artists to design a series of Bebek (‘duck’) figures.
Klasik [kla-sik]
Bebek Klasik is strong, poised and dynamic. Appearing almost two-dimensional in profile, as Klasik’s abstract duckling form is rotated, its depth is revealed, echoing backwards as if reflected in an intriguing visual effect.
Designed to enliven interior spaces and promote wellbeing, Klasik is a tactile talisman to stand alongside a collection of house plants, books or fellow Bebek.
Crafted in Java
Bebek is a playful exploration of the duck form, crafted from striking combinations of contrasting hard and softwoods that celebrate the beauty of natural materials.
The tonal variations of soft Indonesian pine (Pinus merkusii), warm tan mahogany (Toona sureni), and deep, inky rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) shift intriguingly as the light and viewing angle change.
Suci [soo-chee]
Suci, meaning ‘purity’ in Indonesian, has a peaceful, calming quality. A softly curved organic form becomes a sinuous line when viewed from the side, as the rosewood core frames Suci’s silhouette in an intriguing visual effect.
Designed to enliven interior spaces and support wellbeing, Suci is a tactile talisman to sit alongside a collection of house plants, treasured books or fellow Bebek.
Heritage Craft for Nurturing Spaces
Using heritage techniques passed down from the Wayang Golek puppet tradition, Javanese artists transform locally abundant, responsibly sourced wood into charming Bebek. These creations, shaped with traditional tools, have an irresistibly tactile quality that enlivens interiors and fosters a sense of wellbeing.
Sustainably sourced, Ethically made
All the woods used to craft Bebek are ethically sourced from Perum Perhutani, Indonesia’s state-owned forestry company. Perhutani manages one of the world’s largest rainforests and uses sustainable forest management practices to preserve these precious ecosystems while enabling the continuation of craft processes and products.
The Bebek Collector's Edition
Each collector's set includes a first-edition Bebek, accompanied by a printed guide and a soft fabric bag for safekeeping. Just 200 of each Bebek have been made, adding to their rarity and charm.
Presented with care, this collection is a celebration of craft heritage and materials and the richly sensorial relationship between humans and the natural world.
