Halloween Costume Ideas: Vampire, Mummy, Witch, & Bat

Halloween costume inspiration from our spooktacular ducklings

Never too cute to spook, our ducks love to dress up in Halloween costumes and take a waddle on the dark side. Some ducklings go full cosplay (we’re looking at you, Duckula), while others are a little more homespun (see the adorable, sorry, malevolent, Mummy Duckling).

So if you enjoy a scary movie, love a bit of pumpkin carving and can monster mash with the best of them, come with us on a trick-or-treating adventure to quack them all!

Vampire costume inspiration: stake it away, Duckula

For a classic Halloween costume, it’s hard to beat the vampire. With his high-collared cape, sharp fangs and slicked-back hair, the vampire remains Halloween’s ultimate gothic icon. Rooted in Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel and inspired by tales of Vlad the Impaler and Slavic folklore, Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Gary Oldman and Adam Sandler (Hotel Transylvania) have all given us unforgettable Dracula performances.

Now it seems a new era has begun for this iconic Halloween heartthrob. Duckula has risen - and has a terrifying habit of appearing unexpectedly. Our own debonair Nosfeatheratu caused quite the flutter when he debuted in 2025. Admittedly, he is a bit vein (just look at that tailoring), but we don’t care. We think he’s ghoulgeous.

Choose a vampire costume to tap into over a century of pop culture that blends Victorian elegance with a monstrous edge everyone will instantly recognise.

Do say: “Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!” Don’t say “Batduck.”

Join the wrap party with a classic mummy costume

Wrapped in linen, bound to an ancient tomb and awakened by a long-forgotten curse, the Mummy is a legend of the horror genre. Its roots lie in ancient Egyptian beliefs and burial practices, but Hollywood cemented its place in popular culture with Boris Karloff’s 1932 portrayal. From Hammer Horror’s Christopher Lee to Brendan Fraser’s swashbuckling 1999 adventure, the Mummy has taken many forms, but its fascination with the ancient and undead remains. Famously fast to fashion from bandages (or toilet paper!), the humble Mummy costume is one of the easiest Halloween costumes to make at home, and has saved many a party or trick-or-treat situation. Not least the DCUK Halloween Party of 2025, which saw un-boo-lievable scenes when a group of ducklings realised the party was fancy dress at the last minute. After a fair bit of kerfuffle, the Pumpkin Ducklings saved the day by wrapping the wriggling ducklings from beak to toe in bandages.

Do say: “He will never eat, he will never sleep, and he will never stop.”

Don’t say “Have we run out of loo roll?”

Enchanting Magicians share witch and wizard costume ideas

Armed with a wand, spellbook or mysterious potion, a witch or wizard costume combines supernatural power with a bold taste in hats. From ancient Egyptian illusionists to medieval alchemists, from Merlin to Gandalf, Harry Potter to Elphaba, witches, wizards and magicians have become enduring Halloween costume favourites.

Our Magician Ducklings are enormously fun at Halloween parties. Need a mixologist for Witch’s Heart cocktails that shimmer and steam? How about a Tarot reading, or some sleight-of-hand intrigues? Someone to organise the apple bobbing, perhaps? These witches and wizards will thrill young ducks with potions that bubble, but beware: their toil can also spell trouble.

Do say: “Expecto, patronum!”

Don’t say “Is that a toad in your hat?”

Go bats for Batduck’s Halloween costume ideas

For a Halloween bat costume with a superhero twist, Batduck is your bird -  er, bat - of choice. Bats have ancient associations with harvest time, dark nights and ghostly spirits. During Samhain, Celtic people lit bonfires attracting moths and then bats which swooped close to the flames. These fast, dark, shadowy creatures were associated with the ghosts and spirits believed to roam the earth at this time of year.

There are only three species of bats that feast on blood, and all live in Central and South America. Bram Stoker’s Dracula transforms into a vampire bat, fixing the bat’s place in gothic and horror culture. Batducks are both gothic heroes and fangtastic friends. They may be part of the vampire bat family but their bite contains anaesthetic so you won’t feel a thing! Not unlike a certain caped crusader, Batduck is the strong silent type and, frankly, we’re bats about him. Watch out Duckula!

Do say: “I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batduck.”

Don’t say “Is that a penguin?”
