Homeschool with Head Duckling, Maisie
Week 8 of the Duck Diaries and our homeschool ducks are running low on energy. Thank goodness for Head Duckling Maisie!
Drake knows it isn’t easy to take care of your duckish duties and teach the fledgelings everything they need to know. Our mother and father ducks got off to a great start this term, coming up with lots of fun ways to teach the Duckys their three Ws: weeding, writing and waddling. But now everyone’s a bit tired and restless and our feathered families need some help. Enter inspirational educkator extraordinaire, Miss Maisie.
Also known as the Graduation Duckling, Head Duckling Maisie earnt her gowns in literature and always includes some story-telling in her homeschool lessons.
“Teaching duckys is really no different to teaching young witches and wizards,” Maisie explains, when we ask her how she chose this week’s reader: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: “it’s all about giving them the courage and skills they need to fly.”
Weed, write and waddle
After a spot of weeding in the pond, Maisie introduces the Duckys to the basic of flight using a helpful video from BBC Bitesize. But it seems not all the Duckys are paying attention.
Inspired by Antony Gormley’s Master Class, Maisie decides to introduce her class to classical drawing. Once they’ve worked out that it’s easier to draw using a pencil when you hold it in your beak, the duckys create some excellent work. It turns out that feathers make excellent brushes – but only for watercolour paint, as one unfortunate young duck discovered when he dabbled in the sticky acrylics…
What’s your school colour?
Our designer-ducks paint every bamboo root duck individually and love to give each character a personal touch. Maisie had the brilliant idea of trimming her head-duckling gown with the ducklings’ own school colours. But which should they choose? Why not make the most of having your own school by choosing your colours? You can choose the colour of your own Head Duckling’s trim when you place your order.
Thank you so much for sharing your pictures of your DCUK ducks and feathered friends keeping you company at home. Seeing the pleasure your ducks bring gives so much joy to our whole community so please keep sharing your photos and news with the hashtag #athomewithduck
